How do I handle referees in different languages?
Here’s an overview of how you can do reference checks with referees who speak different languages.
When taking a reference, the candidate sometimes adds referees who speak different languages. You can do digital reference checks with referees in several languages in Refapp.
1. Add questionnaires in several languages to your project
To do reference checks in different languages, your project needs questionnaires in each language. Click Project settings and select Add under the Questionnaires tab. The languages you can choose from are set in your company settings.

2. The candidate chooses the referee’s language
If your project has questionnaires in different languages, the candidate can choose each referee’s language when they enter the referee’s contact details. All communication to that referee is then in the selected language, including the questionnaire.

3. The referee can switch language themselves
If the candidate chose the wrong language, the referee can switch to another language using the language picker in the top-right corner of the questionnaire. The new language is saved on the referee, so reminders and the reference report also use it.
Change the referee’s language yourself
You can also change the language for a referee yourself, for example if the language you need isn’t in the project yet:
- Go to Project settings and add a questionnaire in the correct language.
- Go to the referee and edit their details.
- Select the new language and click Save.

The questionnaire changes to the selected language as soon as you save. You don’t need to send a new one to the referee.
Note: When references are given in different languages, the answers are separated in the reference report. All answers in one language come first, followed by all answers in the other language.
